Once in a blue moon something interesting pops up at your local movie theater. Mixed within the endless drab of teen angst melodrama, slapstick humor, and variations on Aesop’s Fables, good films do exist – if sometimes unrecognized by mass media. Martin Scorsese is one such director who has somehow been overlooked until very recently. Films like Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and Taxi Driver somehow fell short of critical acclaim, but nevertheless received incredible civilian praise.
Top Gear reports that Scorsese has just announced another, altogether more automotive, project titled Silver Ghost. Which is about, you guessed it, the story of Lord John Douglas-Scott Montagu, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce.
Just in case the most sophisticated cars on Earth aren’t tempting enough to lure would-be movie-goers to the theater, perhaps the human story of Rolls-Royce’s founders will provide sufficient bait.
As the story goes, Lord Montagu – a turn of the 20th century politician – was the first person to ever enter the House of Commons yard via car. And, that 12 horsepower Daimler was the very same vehicle that King Edward VII would later employ. Apparently Lord Montagu was something of a pioneer in political-automotive lobbying. As the first member of England’s Road Board, he was a factor in the creation of national vehicle registration plates and somehow managed to create a motoring magazine, labeled The Car Illustrated, at a time when few people had even seen automobiles.
Former chairman of Rolls-Royce plc, said to Top Gear: “It covers the thrilling and tragic events during which one of the greatest engineering names in the world was created.” In support, Mr. Scorsese was also quick to throw in a verbal thumbs-up: “When I read the story of Silver Ghost, I was mesmerized. I immediately thought this is a picture that has to be made. I didn’t hesitate for a moment.”
Although nothing’s IMDB official, the rumor is that Christian Bale will be playing Lord Montagu. All we know for sure is that Kiera Knightley’s mom, Sharman Macdonald, wrote the screenplay and one all-important plot twist will be included: the secret of the ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’. Nothing says covert love affair like a gaudy hood ornament named the ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ – but of course that sounds a lot more intriguing than Eleanor Thornton (Lord Montagu’s mistress).
